“Millions long for immortality …

At some point in the weekend comes that dreaded question, “So what do we do now?” to which the usual response, “I don’t know, what do you want to do?”, is a harbinger of boredom and hours of pointless activity, until one of you caves and says, “Ok, I’m getting ready for bed.” So rather than stay home and drive each other crazy, Grumpus and I took the camera along and did what we do second-best: wander randomly around Hong Kong. Besides, we’d run out of DVDs to watch. Here’s the journey in pictures.

The train from Central street scene somehow caught my eye 1 Peking Road

it's raining today
It’s raining today and the view from my living room is quite surreal. This is the fourth city I’ve called home, and after two years it’s finally beginning to feel that way. Hong Kong has raised convenience, shopping and money-making to an art form, and if it’s hard to form an emotional attachment to the place, that’s my fault and not the city’s.

Still, with IFC 2 in plain sight, there is reason to hope. IMG_1724My Chinese teacher hates this building. “It looks like a birdcage,” she says. I on the other hand think that in a town crammed with buildings but bereft of beautiful architecture, this one is distinctive, powerful and eye-catching.

We’ve come to identify it with the Central skyline, especially on the ferry ride back from Kowloon — it’s a welcoming sight. The Hong Kong skyline

Have we learned nothing from Battlestar Galactica?

Of course the first Cylon would have to be Japanese.

Shboom Cebu

IMG_2615I’d like to say we visited Cebu, but the truth is we flew into the Cebu international airport, took a hotel car into the Mactan Shangri-la, and stayed put for four days. The trip left me no less ignorant about the seat of “the second widest-spoken Philippine dialect”, the “second most populous city in the Philippines”, the “center of Asian furniture-making”, and the home of those awesome dried mangoes.

we could have had this conversation

From our current favorite TV show:

Richie: What if the TV were made of cheese?

Spence: You know I think that’s actually possible. You couldn’t use a brie, for instance, but one of the harder cheeses, like a pecorino, would work.

Richie: Then you could make the VCR out of crackers!

Spence: Wait a minute. You wouldn’t eat it!

Richie: Then what’s the point?

Despite Mickey’s and my best efforts, that darned movie cleaned up at the US box office this weekend. For my part, I was mentally poisoning the box office and ordering all American moviegoers to see things my way and just ignore the movie. I think Mickey was ordering everyone to go see Batman instead. The terrible reviews, news of the fiasco that was the premiere, and just general dissing all over cyberspace all cheered us greatly.

Hardly complimentary my dear highnesses, you say, why use your venom on them?
