Bedside reading
While we’re on the subject of entertainment, here’s what’s currently vying for my bedtime attention. The first is another superhero book to which Grumpus has given a hesitant thumbs-up. Chapter 1, where I am so far, is fantastic, sort of bringing to mind the new movie.
The other one, which is deeply deeply entertaining, is this stone-age drawing-room comedy where Father has just discovered fire and is about to lead his tribe onto the next step in human evolution. He meets resistance from his brother Vanya who is convinced that such aspirations are vulgar and unnatural.
Hard to resist a book that reads like this:
Father grinned mischievously. “Do you really think so, Vanya?” he asked. “I mean is this really the turning point? I thought it might be, but it’s hard to be quite sure. Certainly a turning point in the ascent of man, but is it the?” Father wrinkled up his eye in a look of humorous desperation that was characteristic of him at certain moments.
“I don’t know whether it’s a turning point or the turning point,” said Uncle Vanya. “I don’t profess to know what you think you are doing, Edward. Getting above yourself, yes. I’m telling you that this is the most perverse and unnatural –”
