More masterful storytelling from the land down under. The one PJ hails from.

Antonia gave me the heads-up on this story. “It’s like Infernal Affairs in real life,” she said, making sure to use a reference I was familiar with, “and it’s really rattled the community.” No wonder, that. Good cops, bad crazy cop, gambling syndicates, shoot-outs. The whole sordid mess and more.

Tried to watch this Rob Reiner classic last night, but somehow couldn’t get past minute 55. Don’t get me wrong, I think it’s hilarious, setting the mood early on with this brilliant piece of songwriting. But it’s so darn painful to watch.

While we’re on the subject of entertainment, here’s what’s currently vying for my bedtime attention. The first is another superhero book to which Grumpus has given a hesitant thumbs-up. Chapter 1, where I am so far, is fantastic, sort of bringing to mind the new movie.
The other one, which is deeply deeply entertaining, is this stone-age drawing-room comedy where Father has just discovered fire and is about to lead his tribe onto the next step in human evolution. He meets resistance from his brother Vanya who is convinced that such aspirations are vulgar and unnatural.

Ain’t nobody cooler than Chili Palmer. And he’s as cool here as he is here. If I was ever to have a wise guy watching my back it would have to be Chili.
Anyway, it’s hard to beat Elmore Leonard for sheer entertainment, but I have to say that Carl Hiaasen comes close. This book is especially great beach reading.

The one place they couldn’t get to him will soon be sacred no more. Poor Grumpus.
