The battle of the babies
Okay, so this is old news, but how sad is it when you’re a has-been at 3 months?

Eh. Why am I a girl? Must have been the pushup bra question.
Maya is Supergirl
Honest and a defender of the innocent.

Quote of the day
Mickey: It’s nice to indulge you even though you are a drain on my cash flow.
No commentsCiao, Roma!

So Grumpus and I are heading back to Hong Kong in a few minutes. I’ve been gone 26 days, and he’s been gone 23. We spent too much, ate too much, walked too much and drank too much, but we had a most excellent time.
More uploads, stories, etc, when we get back.
Ciao, Roma! We will miss you.

Mickey (exerting not-too-gentle pressure on the back of Maya’s neck to steer her into the proper position): Sweetie, stand here.
Maya: Quit shoving. You know what? You’re the camera nazi of this vacation.
Mickey: It’s only because I care so much.
The camera nazi’s beautiful photographs will be posted by yours truly when we get back home to Hong Kong.

Well! Who woulda thunk it’d be so hard to blog about vacations while on vacation? In between getting up at 6:30 a.m. to beat the crowds at the Forum and the Vatican, wearing out the soles of our shoes trudging around cobbled streets, posing for the Camera Nazi, and then downloading and editing photos at the end of the day, I have no energy left over to give my dear readers a peppy recap of the day’s travails and adventures.
Yet before our culinary discoveries fade completely from my mind, here’s a quickie entry to speak to our wonderous meals and help explain our expanding waistlines.
No commentsHappy Birthday, Daddy!
Daddy turns 67 today. The rest of the folk are celebrating with lunch at Prospect Park today. Grumpus and I are the birthday contingent in Rome.
Happy birthday, Popsicle! Love ya.
No commentsThe land of beautiful horses
We left Istanbul for Kayseri at 8:30 a.m., which meant a 5 a.m. wake-up. “There is no such town or region on the map actually called Cappadocia,” explained Suleyman. “That’s just the old name of this region, and it means ‘Land of the Beautiful Horses.’” Rohirrim! I thought. “Kayseri is the main city in this region.”
Grumpus and I were thoroughly exhausted by the time we met our driver at 11 a.m. at the Kayseri airport. Suleyman tried explaining that the city was an ancient town founded by the Romans (”Caesari”) which, because it lay on the silk road, was traditionally busy and prosperous even though it was completely landlocked. “To this day it is a busy city of 600,000 people,” he told us, “home to many different industries.” His audience could care less; in between fitful catnaps in the back seat of our van, Grumpus and I noticed nothing out of the ordinary — a medium-sized, dusty town with low white buildings, treeless and hot.
No commentsIstanbul was Constantinople
Grumpus and I arrived in Istanbul at 4:30 local time today, after much drama, traffic in two continents, an almost-missed flight connection, bad food and lack of sleep. No matter. The hotel is beautiful and we have - count them - TWO BATHROOMS in our room!
Here’s the first picture of me in Istanbul:
No commentsThe last New York City entry
I’ll be seeing you in all the old familiar places
Grumpus and my other New York City activities have been documented here, here, and of course here. On our off hours we returned to some of our old haunts, starting with the Seventh Avenue (between West 13th and West 14th Streets) branch of the superfantastic Boston ice cream joint Emack and Bolio’s. Their “Serious Chocolate Addiction” - which we’d been dreaming of for 3 years - is of course joy in a cone, a fact that escaped neither the proprietor nor my husband.
